Paddle
Down The Majestic Flambeau River:
The Flambeau River is considered one of the
best whitewater rivers in the Midwest. Many people like to go to Flambeau River
State Forest to begin their canoeing or kayaking excursions. Before it
converges to become the Flambeau River, the river is initially split between
two forks known as the North Fork and the South Fork. The North Fork is a
popular paddling destination, appreciated by locals for being perfect for
relaxing canoeing or kayaking trips. The area is full of wildlife, and there
are frequent bald eagle sightings. The lesser-traveled South Fork is much more
challenging and features passages with rapids and whitewater. It’s ideal for
more advanced paddlers to traverse in the spring or after heavy rain. While
kayaking and canoeing are by far the most popular activities in Flambeau River
State Forest, the park also features camping sites, miles of hiking trails, ATV
and snowmobile trails, as well as opportunities for hunting and fishing.
Embark
on Your Next Outdoor Adventure:
The nearby Dairyland Reservoir is a
fisherman’s delight. Surrounded by six different parks, the reservoir is a
popular fishing destination. A variety of fish including walleye, musky,
sturgeon, and small mouth bass are all frequently caught here.
At the Reclaimed Flambeau Mine Recreational
Area, hike along four miles of trails amid flowers, prairie grass, and
wetlands. In the late nineties, after the mine was no longer used, the area was
transformed into a wildlife preserve for the locals to enjoy. It’s also a great
place to go horseback riding, as there are five miles of adjacent equestrian
trails.
Christie’s Mountain is a local gem and offers
skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. There are 33 runs with a mix of green,
blue, and black diamond trails. The longest trail is nearly a mile long. When
the snow melts, Christie’s Mountain offers guided rock-climbing tours.
